Our Student Council
At Queensway Academy we believe that every child should have a voice, and our school council team is one of the ways we make this happen. The school council is made up of one representative from each class where they meet at least twice every half term to share ideas, discuss ways to improve our school, participate in decision-making processes and to make sure that all pupils feel listened to and involved in school life.
Our school council works on projects that matter to our whole school community.
We focus on:
· Listening to pupil voice – they actively listen to the views of their peers and bring this feedback to council meetings for discussion. They play a clear role in representing the student voice and ensure regular communication by sharing updates and outcomes of meetings with their class.
· Improving our school environment – from new playground ideas to eco-friendly actions.
· Being a positive role model – they will demonstrate exemplary behaviour and consistently upholding school rules and expectations. Through their actions, they lead by example and encourage their peers to do the same.
· Promoting our school values – helping to make sure our school is a happy, safe and a welcoming place for everyone.
· Supporting British Values across the school – through democracy (voting and pupil voice), the rule of law (understanding rules and contributing to rules), individual liberty (making choices and having responsibilities), mutual respect (listening to others and working together) and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs (promoting understanding and plan inclusive events).
· Supporting fundraising and school events – making a difference both in and beyond school. The children share ideas that they have for school events and help organise parts of these.
Why does the school council matter?
Being part of the school council helps our pupils grow in confidence, learn about leadership and teamwork, and understand how democracy works in a real-life setting. It also helps us create a school where everyone’s voice is valued, and where children feel empowered to help shape the future of their learning environment.
