Year 4 and Year 5 pupils enjoyed an exciting opportunity to work with professionals from Flagship Homes and Mole Architects during the first session of a two‑part project exploring how young people view their local environment. Four adults visited the school—two representatives from Flagship Homes and two architects from Mole Architects—to listen to pupils’ ideas about what they like about where they live, what they find challenging, and what they hope their community might look like in the future.

The session began with pupils studying large‑scale maps of the local area. Year 4 and 5 pupils eagerly located their homes, local landmarks, and familiar routes, which helped spark detailed discussions about the spaces they use every day. They shared their thoughts on what they appreciate in their neighbourhoods—such as green spaces, places to meet friends, and areas that feel safe—alongside aspects they would like to change or improve, including better play equipment, safer roads, and more opportunities for young people.

Mole Architects then shared examples of their previous architectural projects. The pupils were captivated by the creativity and variety of the designs, and many commented on how impressive and imaginative the buildings were. This inspired them to think more boldly about what could be possible in their own community.

Throughout the visit, Year 4 and 5 pupils were articulate, enthusiastic, and confident in sharing their views. Their ideas will form an important part of the second workshop, where they will continue shaping their vision for their local area. This initial session empowered pupils to reflect thoughtfully on where they live and express their aspirations with clarity and confidence.
