At Queensway Junior Academy, we are proud to announce the findings of our recent Ofsted report, the first inspection under the new framework.

The new Ofsted framework moves away from single word judgements for schools and rates them on a “report card” system, for junior schools this takes into account 6 areas of inspection. The findings demonstrate the improvement that has taken place in the last three years, as we celebrate 5 out of 6 areas at the “Expected standard”.

Over the past three years, we have focused on all aspects of teaching and learning in school. This work has been underpinned with plans in place to work together and collectively raise quality and aspiration at the school. Working together as a community has led to overcoming many of the challenges faced, with a supportive culture that is ready to further develop and improve.

Inspectors praised the teaching and learning in the school, with clear evidence of raising standards:

“They have rightly focused on creating a clear and progressive curriculum…

…leaders are clear about their next steps and are making quick improvements where needed. Leaders are determined to continue the positive improvements achieved so far.”

Inspectors identified the inclusive, supportive and nurturing school environment. The school vision emphasises respect as part of its foundation, encouraging all children to be kind, use good manners and treat everyone with dignity.

Ofsted commended the academy on its commitment to inclusion:

“Leaders strive for all pupils to be fully included in school life.”

“The school’s pupil premium strategy is carefully targeted and has a positive impact on disadvantaged pupils.”

The positive attitude and behaviour of pupils was reflected in the inspectors’ comments about the school.

Ofsted praised the improvements in behaviour and how pupils feel about coming into school:

“Leaders have an accurate and well‑informed understanding of teaching across the school. They have improved the curriculum significantly over the past 3 years.

The curriculum prioritises pupils’ reading, writing and mathematics knowledge. The school supports pupils to catch up where they have gaps in this key knowledge. The teaching of reading is particularly effective.

Where needed, well-trained staff help pupils catch up with their peers. They recognise the importance of enabling pupils to read fluently so they can access the full curriculum.”

Abi Wright, Principal at Queensway Junior Academy said:

“The hard work, dedication and resilience of our pupils and staff, has been absolutely vital in the success shown in this Ofsted report. We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our local community who work together to improve and build on our strengths at Queensway Junior.”

Pupils are supported to develop for life beyond the classroom, at Queensway there is a strong emphasis on student growth and collective achievement. The school has been able to implement extra-curricular activities that enable all pupils to explore and try new things in preparation for their futures.

Ofsted praised the commitment to delivering opportunities for pupils and said:

“Pupils’ wider talents and interests are well catered for. They eagerly take part in sporting competitions and are proud of their recent football tournament victory. Opportunities to sing in assemblies and school performances allow pupils to broaden their talents. They help to develop their self-esteem and confidence. Leaders ensure that disadvantaged pupils fully benefit from these experiences.”

When speaking to pupils about their time at Queensway, they were eager to share their experience of the school, impressing the inspectors with their knowledge and positivity.

Ofsted commented on pupils’ experience at school:

“Pupils are proud of their kind and welcoming school. They readily share their enjoyment of learning and talk confidently about the knowledge and facts they have learned. Pupils value their positive relationships with teachers. They know staff will help them if they ever feel worried or need help to understand their learning.”

We welcome this recognition and remain committed to further improving outcomes and opportunities for the children and families we serve.
